Dr. Mehreen Faruqi, a Pakistani born migrant has become the first Pakistani to serve in the Australian Parliament. This is a great news for all the Pakistanis and a colossal achievement for the Pakistani migrants. Dr. Faruqi is not only the first Muslim but she is also the first Muslim women who will be serving in the Parliament of Australia.
Dr. Faruqi migrated to Australia way back in the year 1992 along with her family. From her twitter page, we got the information that she is an environmental engineer, climate change activist, proud union member and feminist. Dr. Mehreen Faruqi has been selected to represent New South Wales Greens, a center left party. The party is also the first and oldest parliament in New South Wales. Dr.Faruqi has replaced Cate Faehrmaan as the upper house MP of Greens. She will be taking her position in July 2013 and she has also told the media that she is part of “Greens” for the next 10 years.
Dr Mehreen Faruqi is very popular in the Pakistani community in Australia. Since her arrival in Australia, she has attended and participated in a number of events organized by the President of Pakistan Association of Australia, Mr. Iftikhar Rana.
When it was asked to Dr.Faruqi, she told us “I’m incredibly humbled by the support Greens members across NSW have given me, in selecting me to become their next Greens MP.
Mehreen Faruqi is highly passionate about working hard for the people of NSW and she says that she want to keep the momentum going and says she has been highly impressed by the sheer hardwork of the former MP of Greens Mr. Cate Faehrmaan in the protection of our national parks, combating for gender equality and equal marriage and the crusade for public transport.
Dr Mehreen Faruqi also works as an Associate Professor at the University of New South Wales. Faruqi is a trained and experienced Environmental Engineer, sustainability expert and a community activist. Faruqi believes in putting her heart and soul in everything she does and she has had numerous senior positions in a number of universities, multinationals, local consultancies and has also worked within local government.
In 2009 Dr.Mehreen co-authored a book with Ronnie Harding and Carolyn Hendriks. The book is called “Environmental Decision-Making – Exploring Complexity and Context” which was well received by the critics and the audience. The book was published by the Federation Press .
Since her migration from Pakistan, Mehreen has worked day and night and has made a name for herself. She says that raising a family and working at the same time has been a hectic job for her but she’s extremely happy with what she has achieved. Dr. Mehreen is currently living in Alexandaria Sydney.
The inspiring story of Dr.Mehreen is a living evidence that Australia is a non-racist and migrant friendly country and it’s indeed a land of opportunities. The uplifting story of Mehreen can put a permanent full stop on all the fallacies that says that racism exist in Australia. Hence, we look forward to see more “Mehreens” in our coming future.
